LiAnne Yu is currently working on the book Chasing Margaret Mead. This text explores the power dynamics within academia in terms of who gets to tell whose stories and who has the “authority” to define the portrayal of other cultures. Chasing Margaret Mead follows two Asian American anthropology students encountering the pitfalls of being “token” students of color in a discipline dominated by white, male, heterosexual perspectives.

As an anthropologist, Yu has always struggled with the dark side of academia and the racialized undertones that become apparent when interrogating an author’s identity vs. an author’s subject. Yu hopes to create more opportunities for reflection, conversation, and ultimately positive change towards more socially just forms of cultural representation through her work.
