Ray Masaki

Graphic Design

2022

Ray Masaki’s VCFA thesis project examines ideas of perfectionism in the design industry and how perfectionism can lead to burnout and contribute to cultural elitism. In his thesis, Masaki explains that perfectionism favors and encourages accepted and lionized forms of expression, which perpetuates what is considered the standard and marginalizes under-represented forms of expression. Through interviews with other design practitioners and those outside of the industry, as well as personal case studies, Masaki strives to find strategies to make his design practice more accepting and inclusive while sharing potential approaches with the broader design community.
